How to Check if Your Company Appears in AI Answers (in 30 Minutes)

Your presence in AI answers is already measurable without complex tools. By formulating the right queries and simulating real buyer questions, you can quickly see whether your company is cited, how much visibility it has (QPR), and where the information gap excludes you from the decision process.

The problem: visibility no longer equals decision presence

In B2B contexts, digital presence has historically been assessed through indirect metrics: rankings, traffic, impressions. This model assumed a linear user behavior: search → click → evaluation.

In the GEO context, this assumption is already outdated.

Supplier selection increasingly happens within the generated answer itself, before any interaction with websites. If a company does not appear in that answer, it does not enter the evaluation phase. This is not a loss of traffic—it is a loss of access to decision-making.

The operational consequence is clear:
it is no longer sufficient to be discoverable. You must be cited.

The mechanism: verification starts from queries, not tools

The most common mistake is approaching this problem with a tool-first mindset: looking for platforms, dashboards, automated metrics.

This is premature.

In GEO, measurement starts from a more fundamental principle:
a generative answer is a function of the query.

Models do not return a universal ranking; they construct situational responses. A company’s presence varies depending on:

  • how the question is phrased
  • the implicit decision context
  • the level of technical specificity
  • the available informational signals

As a result, verification is not a technical task—it is a decision simulation exercise.

How to formulate a generative decision query

A useful query is not a keyword, but a question that already contains a potential decision.

Examples:

  • “Which European suppliers of ISO-certified mechanical components for automotive?”
  • “Alternatives to [competitor] for high-precision CNC machining”
  • “How to choose an industrial valve manufacturer for chemical plants”

These queries share three characteristics:

  1. Application context (automotive, chemical, etc.)
  2. Selection criteria (certification, precision, alternative)
  3. Implicit decision intent

A generic query (“mechanical components”) does not activate the same type of response—it produces information, not selection.

Which systems to test (and why they are not equivalent)

Verification must be conducted across multiple systems, because each has:

  • different datasets
  • different synthesis logic
  • uneven update cycles

Minimum operational set:

  • ChatGPT
  • Perplexity
  • Gemini
  • Claude

This is not redundancy; it is contextual variance.

A company may appear in one system and not in another—not due to error, but due to differences in available signals and aggregation logic.

Execution: the actual test (30 minutes)

  1. Open a system (e.g., Perplexity)
  2. Enter a real decision-oriented query
  3. Read the answer without intervening
  4. Repeat across 3–5 relevant queries

Average time: 30 minutes.

This is sufficient to obtain a first data point:
are you inside or outside the answer.

How to read and interpret the answers

A frequent mistake is reading the output as informational content.

It must be read as a selection output.

Key elements to observe:

  • explicitly mentioned companies
  • order of presentation (not neutral)
  • presence of categories vs. specific names
  • referenced sources
  • level of detail associated with each actor

Two critical cases:

  1. Complete absence → decision invisibility
  2. Marginal or generic presence → low informational relevance

Share of Presence in the Answer (SPA)

To make verification operational, a simple metric is needed.

Definition:
Share of Presence in the Answer (SPA) = number of mentions of your company / total relevant mentions in the answer

Example:

  • The answer includes 5 companies
  • Yours is mentioned once

SPA = 1 / 5 = 20%

This metric does not measure absolute visibility, but competition within the answer itself.

Risk: interpreting the data with SEO logic

This is where the main distortion occurs.

A low SPA does not necessarily indicate a “ranking problem.” It may reflect:

  • absence of verifiable signals
  • content not structured for citability
  • lack of clarity on scope and specialization

In GEO, presence is not a function of content volume, but of its citability.

Monthly monitoring template

Minimum structure:

  • Query
  • System used
  • Companies mentioned
  • Presence (Yes/No)
  • SPA
  • Qualitative notes (how you are described, if present)

Frequency: monthly.

Daily granularity is unnecessary: models do not evolve with the same dynamics as SERPs.

Implication: what to do with the result

The data is not descriptive—it is operational.

Three scenarios:

1. You are not present

Structural problem.
You are not part of the informational set from which models construct answers.

2. You are present but marginal

Positioning problem.
The system recognizes you, but does not consider you relevant.

3. You are central in the answer

Rare case.
Indicates alignment between content, signals, and decision queries.

Quick test (components industry)

Query:
“European suppliers of certified mechanical components for automotive”

Output:

  • 4 companies mentioned
  • target company not present

Interpretation:

  • not a traffic issue
  • a missing presence in the generative selection process

Identified gap:
lack of explicit signals related to certifications + automotive context.

Operational conclusion

Verifying presence in AI answers does not require advanced tools, but discipline in query formulation and answer interpretation.

The critical question is not “where do you rank on Google,” but:

whether you exist at the moment the answer is formed.

That is the level at which GEO operates.
